Regardless of construction, all fuel tanks and filler necks exist in the harsh undercar environment, where they are subject to rain, snow, ice, dirt, road salt, and debris. Plastic tanks are formed from High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) that is blow molded into shape. Metal tanks start out as sheets of steel or aluminum that are then stamped and welded together. A pressure relief/rollover valve is mounted to the tank to prevent pressure buildup, allow vapors to flow to the EVAP canister, and prevent fuel flow in case of vehicle rollover.įuel tanks are manufactured from metal or plastic. A pressure/vacuum relief fuel cap at the filler neck opening allows air into the tank as fuel is used while preventing the escape of vapors. The filler neck connects the tank to the body so fuel can be added. The fuel tank is typically attached to the vehicle with retaining straps. Baffles inside the tank prevent fuel from sloshing away from the pump pickup and minimize noise, and the tank is a key component in the Evaporative Emission Control System (EVAP), which prevents fuel vapors from escaping to the atmosphere.
In addition to being a reservoir for fuel, the tank on most modern vehicles houses the electric fuel pump and fuel gauge sender. A fuel tank is much more than a glorified gas can bolted to the underside of the vehicle.
